If you’ve been farming in WA, chances are you’ve hung more than a few gates on a brooker hinge. It’s the go-to. The one your neighbour uses, and probably your dad, too. And they get the job done. But we’ve spent years out on properties talking to farmers, contractors and fencers about what works in the paddock and what could work better. That’s how our Easy Install Bolt-Thru Timber Post Hinge Set (FG2) came about — not as a reinvention of the wheel, but as an improvement to a classic design.

The traditional brooker hinge has been a staple on WA farms for decades. It works with a saddle bracket that bolts through a timber post and uses a threaded rod as the pivot point. Simple enough in theory, but spend a day installing a run of gates and a few pain points start to show up.

That said, if you’ve installed a few, you’ll know there are areas where the design could go further.
One-sided fitting.
The saddle bracket only fits one side of the gate because it relies on sleeves welded to the gate itself which limits your install options.
Small hardware under big loads.
The full weight of the gate hangs off a small M6 bolt and clamp arrangement. On a standard gate that might hold up but on a longer or heavier gate it can mean a lot of stress on not much steel.
Fiddly installation.
Clamps top and bottom, small dovetail joins on round clamps can add up to more time installing and more trips back to the ute for tools.
Thin galvanising.
Standard zinc-plated threads on a brooker hinge sit at around 25 microns of coating. In some places that will be enough, but in coastal WA or anywhere with salt in the air it might not stand up to the conditions.
None of that makes the brooker hinge a bad product. It just means there’s room to build on what works.

That’s not a small difference when you’re talking about longevity!
Hinge either side.
No sleeves, no collars required. The FG2 fits any 25NB farm gate, and you can mount either side of the gate. That flexibility gives you one less thing to worry about.
Stronger, longer gudgeon.
Our 72mm non-tapered gudgeon is the longest on the market. It holds the gate tighter and firmer with no wobble. Pair that with our extra-large 50mm diameter washers, and you’ve got a hinge that won’t pull through the post — even as older timber dries out and softens over the years.
Pre-pressed threads.
The FG2’s pre-pressed threads and a simple gudgeon fit mean fewer components and a faster install. Sit the gate on the gudgeon, place the saddle over the studs, tighten up: done. Less fiddling around with multiple parts means less time per gate.

You can even install gates low to the ground without drilling too close to the base of the post, which means less risk of rot down the track.
If you’re a fencing contractor hanging multiple gates in a day, the time savings add up fast. And fewer parts doesn’t mean less strength — where the standard brooker relies on a small M6 bolt, we use a full-strength 20mm thread with welded and riveted joins, built to carry real gate weight over time.
